Tasty Treats (11)

Happy Fathers Day to all you Fathers and Grandfathers and Stepfathers and Soon-to-Be Fathers!

I’m back with another edition of Tasty Treats!

Tasty Treats is where I take some time to celebrate the books I received recently. I don’t do these posts on a regular basis so you never know when one is coming! I like to keep you guys on your toes!

As you probably know by now, my Husband and I are moving to Columbia, SC in a few weeks. Well, my awesome Husband and awesome co-workers got together all sneaky like and threw me a little Goodbye Shindig at a local pub. It was such a complete surprise and I loved every minute of it!

How does that relate to Tasty Treats? Well one of my co workers gave me a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card to uplift me during the moving stress. So I got to go shopping!! (Thank you!)

Here is what I got:

City of a Thousand Dolls and The Moon and MoreCity of a Thousand Dolls by Miriam Forster

The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen

I’ve been eying The City of a Thousand Dolls for a while now so I can’t wait to get to it.  The Moon and More has such a pretty summertime cover and I love Sarah Dessen!

I’m totally going to miss my coworkers and I’ve loved being a part of the Lockhart Family with them these past seven years!

What books have you recently added to your collection?

Tasty Treats (10)

Hi there!

I’m back for another edition of Tasty Treats!

Do any of you enter book giveaways on other blogs? I definitely do! In fact, I enter a ton of them never really expecting to win because, you know the internet is full of billions of people! But every once in a while I do win an online book giveaway, and I am always completely shocked when I do.

Well, that happened a few weeks ago, when I entered Teen Librarian Toolbox’s Orca Publisher’s Book Giveaway. If you’re unfamiliar with Orca Book Publishers they are a publishing house that focuses on creating books that will appeal to reluctant readers. I entered the giveaway because my school is chock-full of reluctant readers and although I have a few of the Orca titles, I thought that it’d be fun to add some newer ones to my Media Center collection.

Well, guess what?!

i won

YAY! I totally won!

So, Orca Book Publishers sent me 10 of their newest 2013 titles!

The first set is Orca Currents. These titles are short high-interest novels with contemporary themes, written expressly for middle-school students reading below grade level.

Orca Currents

Caching In by Kristin Butcher

Eric and his best friend, Chris, find themselves on a high-stakes geocaching treasure hunt.

FaceSpace by Adrian Chamberlain
Fourteen-year-old Danny invents a fictitious friend in an effort to fit in at school.
Vanish by Karen Spotford-Fitz
Fourteen-year-old Simone becomes a key witness in a parental-abduction investigation.
Stolen by John Wilson
Fifteen-year-old Sam solves a mystery while treasure-hunting on the Australian coast.

Then there are also the Orca Soundings titles. These books have contemporary themes and exciting stories, making the Orca Soundings for reluctant teen readers books that teens want to read.

Orca Soundings

Deadly by Sarah N. Harvey

Amy is abducted and locked away, forced to write essays about the error of her ways.

Night Terrors by Sean Rodman
Dylan struggles with the memories of the death of his younger brother while fighting for survival in a snow-bound resort.

Tagged by Eric Walters
Oswald uses graffiti to fight back against an over-bearing politician.

Damage by Robin Stevenson
Theo ends up in a strange situation with a girl who has kidnapped her own child.

And last, but not least are the Orca Sports books. Perfect for reluctant teen readers, the Orca Sports titles combine mystery and adventure with team sports such as hockey, baseball, football and soccer, and solo sports like scuba diving, running, sailing, horse racing and even race-car driving. Orca Sports books engage young readers with exciting plots and easy-to-read language.

Orca Sports

Break Point by Kate Jaimet
When Connor and Maddy discover that their tennis club is going bankrupt, they set out to try and save it.

Hurricane Heat by Steven Barwin
Years after Travis’s parents die in a car crash and he and his younger sister, Amanda, are separated, Travis sets out to search for her at the risk of losing an opportunity for a future baseball career.

So there you have it! I’ve already put these on the shelves and at least 6 of them have already been checked out! Thank you so much to Teen Librarian Toolbox for hosting the giveaway and thank you so much to Orca Book Publishers for supplying the giveaway and for not forgetting about the reluctant readers of the world!

Do you know any reluctant readers? Have you had success with the Orca books? Which ones are your favorites?

Tasty Treats (8)

Hello everyone!

It’s Sunday (a kind of dreary, potentially going to rain Sunday) and I’m actually posting today! I rarely post on Sunday so it’s kind of exciting when I do! :)

I am officially on Spring Break (WHOOT!)  which is awesome because although I love my students and my school, I was in need of some time off. Spring Break affords me time to lounge, read, visit the library and spend time with my friends (and my cousin Audrey who is coming to visit!).

Friday was a teacher work day so we got to go home much earlier than we normally would, so with my extra free time I decided it was time to check out my local public library. I picked up a few audiobooks, but I also poked around the Friends of the Library Used Bookstore and found some fun treats! Now I don’t know about you but when I visit a new book store like Barnes & Noble I get a little crazy. I get a massive case of book lust. The problem is that I can’t AFFORD to BUY all of the books I want (which is ALL of them). I feel a lot like this little guy.

Book Lust

So close, yet so far.

It’s just not possible for me to buy every book I want! So when I find a deal like I did at the used bookstore I get so excited! I have to say that I purchased 6 books (3 paperback, 3 hardcover) for $16.oo.  YUP! I think that’s a pretty good steal for SIX books!

So, let’s see what I snagged:

Tasty Treats1

The three paperbacks are:

Paperbacks

Halo by Alexandra Adornetto

Oh. My. Gods. by Tera Lynn Childs

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han*

The three hardcovers (for only $3.50 each!):

hardcovers

Princess Academy by Shannon Hale*

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher*

Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy by Ally Carter*

I’m so proud of myself for finding these at such good prices and in such good condition! This does however, mean that I need to do some book shelf rearranging to make some room for these new additions…but hey! It’s Spring Break right?! I’ll have time for it!

What tasty treats have you acquired recently?

*= I’ve already read this one but who cares!

Hi there! Happy Sunday!

Recently, I received two gift cards to Barnes and Noble as Christmas gifts!  One from my brother-in-law (thanks Ray!) and the other from my Secret Santa at school (Thanks Dep!).

You can imagine how excited I was upon receiving these gift cards! I immediately started dreaming out what titles I’d buy. I spent some time reviewing my Waiting on Wednesday posts and my TBR list on Goodreads to refresh my memory on books I’d been wanting for a while.  Well, I ended up purchasing four books with those gift cards and they all finally came in this week (SO EXCITED!). Shall we take a looksy?!

Look at these tasty treats! Yum!

Look at these tasty treats! Yum!

I love looking at them all lined up, but let’s get a better look at each of those pretty covers!

My Life Next Door by Huntley FitzpatrickDelirium by Lauren Oliver

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
Delirium by Lauren Oliver

Grave Mercy by Robin LeFeversThrone of Glass by Sarah J. Mass

Grave Mercy by Robin LeFevers
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Man, I’m a sucker for brand new books! Is it weird that I kind of want to caress them all? You know what…just don’t answer that!

Each of these books are ones that initially drew my attention, but then I kept hearing such fabulous reviews I knew I had to read them. So yes! I think I spent my gift cards pretty wisely, don’t you?!

Hi there!

I’ve missed you all so much! I have been so crazy busy with work and other work related things that I’ve been memeing only…which is kinda lame I know, but something had to give for a little while! Things are kinda back to normal pace now (at least for a little while) so I’m trying to start making up for lost blogging time.

So, this is still a meme post, but I don’t do it on a weekly basis so I figure its different!

This week I have had the opportunity to get some tasty treats to add to my reading stack, so let’s see what they are!

Skinny A Girl Named Digit
I was able to pick up this copy of Skinny by Donna Cooner for free Tuesday morning at our county’s annual Principal’s Breakfast. Every year our local Media Specialist professional organization hosts a breakfast thanking our principals for support.  Everyone gets to leave with a free book, so when I saw Skinny on the table I snatched it up because I’ve heard great things about it!  I also saw A Girl Named Digit by Annabel Monaghan at my public library this week and it just sounds so cute I had to grab it!

My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece Dead City

I recently discovered that there is a Forever Young Adult book club meeting at my public library…I can’t wait to check it out! Apparently My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher is their November read.  I’ll be honest, it sounds really weird, but I’m going to give it a try! This weekend I was able to spend a few days at the Florida Association for Media in Education conference, which I love! I presented on a monthly event we do in my Media Center, threw a social hour for our local organization, and got a chance to meet local Orlando author James Ponti, who wrote Dead City.  He was really friendly and funny and I can’t wait to start reading it!

Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter

You guys know how much I love Ally Carter’s books, so I was so happy to finally find the audiobook for Uncommon Criminals in my local library!  I’m already on disc five of six, so obviously it’s a good one!

Read Tshirt

A the FAME conference, there is always a lady selling bookish and library related -.  I’ve never had the chance to get any, so this year I decided I was going to buy myself a tshirt…and I did! There was this super cute hoodie I wanted, but it was like $40, so I chose this cute t-shirt instead.  It fits perfectly and I can’t wait to wear it to school!

So there you have it- all the fun bookish things I received this week! What fun books or bookish treats did you get recently?

Tasty Treats (2)

Well good morning everyone and Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

(Do any dad’s read my blog?  If so, let me know!)

Getting new books is like getting tasty treats that I can’t wait to devour, hence the name of this post “Tasty Treats”! (I am working on a Tasty Treats banner…well my husband is working on it for me!)   This morning I wanted to share all the fun books and audiobooks I got-my-hands-on this past week. So what are we waiting for!?

Tasty Treats Stack

Every thing in this stack is a title on the 2012-2013 Florida Sunshine State Book List.  These are some of the books I need to read since I’m a school Media Specialist and the Battle of the Books team coach.  Not only will I be reading and reviewing these books over the summer, but I’ll also be writing a ton of trivia questions from each book for my team to study. Lets look at the covers shall we?

The following titles are the Sunshine State books that I already had in my Media Center catalog.

Sunshine State Books

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick

A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park

The Juvie Three by Gordon Korman

Some of the books on the list were not already ones I had in my Media Center, so I’ve had to go buy them, like the books below.

More Sunshine State Books

The Trouble with Half a Moon by Danette Vigilante

90 Miles to Havana by Enrique Flores-Galbis

Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to Not Reading by Tommy Greenwald

How Lamar’s Bad Prank Won a Bubba-Sized Trophy by Crystal Allen

I addition to all these middle grades titles I also needed some Young Adult audiobooks in my life.  If I read just YA or just MG I get kinda bored with the one genre, so I have to mix it up now and then.  Since the summer is a time full of middle grade reading,  and I needed some new audiobooks to listen to while running, I decided to pick up some YA listens from my local public library.

Beastly and If I Stay

Beastly by Alex Flinn (currently listening to)

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

So, there you have it – my recently received tasty treats! I know I’ll be having fun attacking these over the next few weeks!  What fun reads did you get this week?

Howdy!

A few weeks ago I decided not to participate in the In My Mailbox meme.  Not out of protest but out of personal conviction regarding my obsessive blogger behavior.  You can read that post in full here.

So, while I will no longer be writing a weekly post about what books I received, I will be posting about this randomly…or better yet, whenever I feel like it! :)  The posts will be called Tasty Treats.  I tend to view all books as tasty treats just waiting to be devoured, so why not just call it that?!

Now let me just tell you that May was a busy month for my digital mailbox as well as the physical one.  I somehow managed to win like three giveaways and received some really exciting books from authors and publishers!  I’ve already posted about some of the books I got this month here. So, today I am showing off  the second group of tasty treats I got during May!

Insurgent by Veronica RothFirst let me show off an audiobook I received from Harper Audio- Insurgent by Veronica Roth!  I just finished it yesterday in the car and am already ready for the third book in the series! It was sooo good! Thanks to Harper Audio!

Small Medium at Large by Joanne Levy

A huge thanks to author Joanne Levy for sending me a review copy of her debut novel Small Medium at Large and the book marks (not shown).  I can’t wait to share them with my students!

Birthmarked and Born Wicked

Also, thanks to Kare at Ex Libris for the two books I won in one of her recent giveaways!  Above you see Birthmarked by Caragh M. O’Brien and Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood.  Now I have two copies of Born Wicked- one of which will go to my school library.

Lexapros and Cons and Lost in the River of Grass

Also, I snagged a copy of Lost in the River of Grass by Giny Rorby from my Media Center since it’s on the Sunshine State list this year.   And finally, a big thanks to Heidi at YA Bibliophile for Lexapros and Cons by Aaron Karo, which I won in one of her recent giveaways!

You can see I got some really rad looking books over the past few weeks!  I can’t wait to get started on them and it’s going to be soon because school is almost out for the summer! YAY!
