Author Interview/Giveaway: Jessica Spotswood

Happy Monday! A special Monday!

In the miJessica Spotswooddst of the chaos that is my life right now I recently managed to read Sisters’ Fate, the final book in the Cahill Witch Chronicles trilogy by Jessica Spotswood (you can read my review here). This series is one of my favorites because I think magic and alternate histories are super cool…also romance. I like romance!

Due to how much I enjoy the Cahill Witch Chronicles, I’m super excited that today is a special day because we have Jessica Spotswood here with us answering some questions! Recently Jessica offered a free book to any blogger who wanted to host an interview and giveaway, and there was no way I was going to pass on the opportunity to chat a little with her…and giveaway a really fun read!

Interview

Q. Can you share with us 6 words that describe the Cahill Witch Chronicles for those who may not be familiar as familiar with them?
A. Sisters & witches & kissing!
Q. I love the mix of alternate history and magic that you get when you read this series! What initially inspired you to write an alternate history mixed with fantasy?
A. Thank you! My inspiration for the magical aspect was a dream I had in which my sisters and I (like Cate, I’m the oldest of three sisters) were fighting over a magical locket. The idea of writing about sisters with a powerful magical inheritance and exploring the mix of love and sibling rivalry really stuck with me. My inspiration for the alternate history was wanting to create a society – worse than today, or real history – in which powerful, clever, independent women were feared and scorned.

Q. The Cahill sisters are all so different. How you identify with one (or all) of the Cahill sisters?
A. I identify most with Cate because I was in her head for three books; I know her best, know what she would do or say in so many situations. But I’m probably most like Tess – bookish, quiet, observant, good at school, always playing the peacemaker. Maura was hardest for me to identify with because she’s always picking fights, and I am so non-confrontational!

Q. So, Maura just
makes me so angry but I also empathize with her—she really is interesting. If you were ever to rewrite the story from Maura’s perspective what do you think would surprise us about her story? Sisters' Fate by Jessica Spotswood
A. I hope it would be surprising how easy it is to identify with her. She makes a lot of terrible mistakes, but she has a very big heart and big dreams and is really just so full of wanting that she gets in her own way. Also, remember: she’s only fifteen. I bet most of us can think of a time when we acted out of jealousy or ambition and regretted it later.

Q. I’ve heard that you had to completely rewrite book 2, Star Cursed, from scratch. Did you have any similar stressful situations while writing Sisters’ Fate or did wrapping up the series come easier?
A. No, fortunately writing Sisters’ Fate was much easier! I knew how I wanted the book to end, and at the end of Star Cursed, the stakes were already so high in the relationships between Maura and Cate and Cate and Finn, and tension was already at a breaking point both in the convent and in the city, so it was fun to get to ignite all of that.

Q. What are you working on now that the series is finished?
A. I just finished editing an anthology, Petticoats & Pistols, which will be out next April! It’s historical YA – fifteen short stories about American girls throughout history, from pirates to protestors and belles to bank robbers. My authors are amazing: J. Anderson Coats, Andrea Cremer, Y.S. Lee, Katherine Longshore, Marie Lu, Kekla Magoon, Marissa Meyer, Saundra Mitchell, Beth Revis, Caroline Richmond, Lindsay Smith, Robin Talley, Leslye Walton, and Elizabeth Wein. And I just finished writing my first contemporary YA, Wild Swans, which will also be out next April! It’s about a girl dealing with her mother – who abandoned her when she was two – coming back home with the two half-sisters she’s never met. She also falls in love with a tattooed poet.

Q. I know you’re now working in a library (me too!), so you’re surrounded by books all the time. What have been some of your favorite books that you’ve read so far this year?
A. Yay libraries! My favorite books so far this year have been All The Rage by Courtney Summers (such an important, searingly angry book about rape culture); The Walls Around Us by Nova Ren Suma (creepy gorgeous and a master class in voice); The Storyspinner by Becky Wallace (a fabulous fantasy which I loved so much I blurbed); and Hold Me Like a Breath by Tiffany Schmidt (which I also blurbed – the heroine Penny has an incredible journey).

Q. Okay, this is totally random I know, but I follow you on Instagram and Twitter and I need to know where on Earth do you get all of those adorable dresses that you’re always wearing?!
A. Thank you! Mostly they are from Modcloth! I love a good quirky print.

It’s Giveaway Time!

Hi there BookTasty friends!

Yeah! You read it right! It is definitely giveaway time! Whoot!

Being a middle school librarian, my heart has a special place for middle grades fiction. In fact some of my favorite authors write primarily for those readers in the middle school years!

One of the most popular authors in my library right now is I Funny by James PattersonJames Patterson. Yes! The very same James Patterson who writes adult thrillers also writes middle grade books. His Daniel X books are rarely checked in and it’s the exact same with his Middle School series! Additionally, Patterson’s humorous I Funny has a hold list a mile long and it’s popular among both my boys and girls.

Well, I Funny has a new sequel called, I Even Funnier, which releases TOMORROW Monday December 9!!

Middle schooler Jamie Grimm has big dreams of being the best stand-up comic in the world – and he won’t let the fact that he’s in a wheelchair get in his way.

I Even Funnier by James PattersonAfter winning the New York state finals in the Planet’s Funniest Kid Comic Contest, Jamie’s off to Boston to compete in the national semi-finals. But when one of his best buddies runs into trouble at school and a sudden family health scare rears its head, Jamie has to put his comedic ambitions on hold and stand by the people he cares about. Can Jamie pass up the big competition for the sake of his friends and family?

To celebrate the release of I Even Funnier I’m giving away a copy of BOTH I Funny and I Even Funnier! YAY! Thanks so much to the people at Little, Brown  for donating both books for this giveaway! I’m so excited to be able to host this giveaway!

Okay! So, how do you enter the giveaway? Well, there is just one step to enter. The only thing you have to do is fill out the form below.

Kami Kinard (The Boy Project): Author Interview And Giveaway

One of my bookish/blogger goals for 2012 was to host a giveaway. Well, the year is still young and I decided to try it out.

The Boy Project by Kami KinardSo I will be giving away an Advanced Reader Copy of The Boy Project by Kami Kinard! This is Kinard’s debut into middle grades fiction and I really enjoyed it. Plus, author Kami Kinard is really awesome and agreed to answer some interview questions for us!

What are some of the authors or books that influenced you in any way as a writer?

Probably the most influential writers were the ones whose books I read as a child – the ones who made me fall in love with reading! I read every Nancy Drew book, every Hardy Boys, every Bobbsey Twins, and even every Beverly Gray mystery. I liked the sense of adventure.

As an adult, I think I’ve been influenced by all of the good writers I read. I try to pay attention to what they do that works. I really admire JK Rowling’s characterization and Cornelia Funke’s fabulous imagination and world building, for example. I love the way Jeff Kinney uses humor to bring us back to middle school.

What was your favorite scene in The Boy Project to write and why?

I like the scene where Kara and Tabbi are on the phone and Tabbi mentions that she likes Kara’s crush. This is written like a script, so I had to find a way to put beats into it. I think it worked out well.

Throughout the book Kara is focused on getting her first boyfriend. Tell us a little about your first boyfriend.

I try to forget about my first boyfriend! But I will say this: I was a lot older than Kara when I dated him!

Your website says you used your middle school journals to get into character for writing Kara. How are you are Kara similar and different?

Kara is a lot like who I was in middle school. She’s creative, fairly smart, likes to read, wants good grades, and, of course, a boyfriend. We are different in that Kara is much braver than I ever was. (Maybe this is why it took me a few more years to realize my middle school dream of achieving girlfriend status! ) Also, I would have NEVER waited until the last minute to throw together a science fair project! And I would have never ever ever tried to hide in a boys’ room.

Will you be writing more middle grades fiction in the future? Can you give us any hints?

I am working on another humorous middle grade now about a girl who has an identity crisis. So far it involves chorus class, a name change, a rock-star-wannabe dad, and a tuba. If I tell you any more, it’ll give it away!

———-

A huge thank you to Kami for taking the time to answer some questions! For more info on Kami Kinard check out her website!

On to the giveaway!

This is my first giveaway and I think it’s a pretty fun one! The Boy Project Prize Pack

One winner will receive an Advanced Reader Copy of The Boy Project by Kami Kinard and a fun prize pack full of bookmarks, tattoos, and bracelets (Thanks to Kami for sending these). I love the bracelets!
