Well hello again!
When I first saw this book I was a goner. If you’ve known me for any amount of time you probably know that I really, really am a total sucker for covers with girls in beautiful gowns, mostly because I just want to wear them. Well, Grave Mercy has an awesome gown on the cover and an awesome fantasy inside!
Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf? Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.
Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?
I knew this book was going to be fabulous just from looking at the co ver andGrave Mercy didn’t let me down. Grave Mercy has a hardcore heroin, smouldering romance (yes, smouldering), and an absorbing fantasy storyline.
Ismae is seriously bad@$$. She transformed from a vulnerable victim to someone with the power to choose her own future. Also, she trained at a convent for assassin nuns. ASSASSIN NUNS. For real. Doesn’t it make you think of that Doctor Who episode, Tooth & Claw with the werewolves and assassin monks?!
The whole fantasy mixed with adventure and alternate history is right up my alley. I love how the setting is a mix of medieval Europe and a completely created world where supernatural things can happen. The idea that the god of death leaves a kill mark for his minions to find is so creepy-cool.
As usual, I like a good romance. Now, I do need to say that the love story is so incredibly expected. I mean, you know from the start who the love interest is, but that doesn’t matter! This romance is just so sexy that it wraps its tentacles around you and completely sucks you in. Awesome points for Robin LaFevers!
So, Grave Mercy definitely has the BookTasty stamp of approval! If you’re high school aged, a fan of fantasy and you’re looking for a new series to get lost in, the you need to read this one. I’m hooked in this series for sure!
